Paperless Environment

“The paperless society is a vision proposed by F. W. Lancaster (1982) and others in which electronic publishing and communication would largely eliminate the need for paper, in every aspect of our society as living environment.

Since the introduction of computers in modern society, their advocates have touted them as the mechanism to create a “paperless society”. Many times researchers have predicted the free flow of information and/or documents without need for printing or paper. Unfortunately, many understandably doubt society can achieve such a goal.

Many believe that the dream of a paperless society, cannot occur. In fact, many argue that society has become more inundated with paper since the appearance of computers. Perhaps the first goal should be to understand the concept of “paperless”. Within the context of this workshop, “paperless environment” is intended to imply a reliance on computers and computer-based technologies to access data, information, documents, and similar materials and additionally to include the electronic submission of assignments.”
